Setting Up

Borges built his labyrinth around his dreams, nightmares, travels and the history of his ancestors which was also the history of his country. To Borges El laberinto signified the symbol of man's perplexity before life's mystery.

We suggest using a labyrinthine scenography to commemorate the centennial of Borges' birth in 1999. Indeed, a labyrinth would take us to a climate of intimacy with the author and give us the pleasure, both collective and intimate, of a quest and discovery. The labyrinth best represents the work of Borges -man as prisoner and the paradoxical place. The labyrinth symbolizes movement from the one to the many, from space to the absence of space and from time to the absence of time. The labyrinth also traditionally represents chaos made orderly by human intelligence and a voluntary disorder which holds its own key. Furthermore it represents nature (a forest is a labyrinth of vegetation) and human constructions (a library is a labyrinth, so is a big city).

The mirror is another frequent Borges symbol (one of the oldest since it appears in his first books of poems). It helps us to decipher the personal content of symbols, it makes us examine another image and reflects an image which is not in them but outside. What's more, the inverted reflction is also a reflection of conciousness and self contemplation.
